I know it is late, but can you blame me? My moments of clarity and moments that I feel well enough to do much of anything are becoming fewer and farther between. Plus my resolutions are not your typical resolutions.
The unofficial motto of our small group at church is "Go big, or don't go at all." When it was our turn to do the hospitality table at church, we had a huge set up with "Food from Around the World", complete with a snow making machine. When we tried to plan a social event after we finished one of our studies, we settled on dinner after a weekend camping trip was extensively discussed. So in the spirit of my small group I do not have one or two resolutions. I have 50.
For the past three years, I have put together a list of around 50 goals for the year. These aren't really resolutions in the typical sense. They are not all things that I am trying to change about myself or my life. Some of them I am already doing and want to continue. Others are single events. They are more goals that keep my life focused than resolutions. Some of them are things that I want to do this year (go sailing, go surfing, see Jimmy Buffett live, among others). Some are meant to improve my life (pray and read the Bible every day, serve others, work out every day, get back to the veggie drinks and wheat grass). Some of them are places I want to go (Red Rocks, Hiking somewhere new to me, an overnight boat trip.) Some of them I do not even have control over (Seeing the Cubs win the World Series).
This is the third year that I have done this list, and it has worked out pretty well so far. The first year I did it, one of the items on the list was to get my passport stamped from a country that I have not been yet. It bothered my wife so much, that she actually planned a trip to St. Martin so I could cross it off. It is one of the best trips we have ever been on.
Any way, at this point I'll print the list of and put it in my wallet. I take it out from time to time to look at and to keep my life focused. If everything on this list happens, 2009 with without a doubt, be the best year ever.
