Stand Up Paddle Boarding had has been on my list of "Must Do's" for quite some time. One of the motivations form this trip to Cocoa Beach was to finally give it a try. It exceeded all expectations, thanks in part to a whole bunch of animal friends.
The paddle boarding itself was great. I am drawn to any sport on the water as it is, and surfing has always been one of my favorites. A stand up paddle board is basically a extra large surf board that you stand up on and use a extra long canoe paddle to move through the water. Ideally I would use the board and paddle to glide to some good waves to ride. This being the first time, we stayed in the calm inter coastal. It was a very relaxing and soothing activity. Gliding over the water being so close I could dip my toes, yet have no concerns about falling in, it was special.
The really special moments on this trip was the 30 plus manatees that made themselves at home in the shallow waters near the dock. It was a challenge at times to avoid them, and on more than one occasion we startled the manatees that hid just below to surface. Even as we stopped paddling and floated around, they would still come to us. Close enough that I could feel their breathe and they shook my board with their tails.
To add to special moment, we were able to take Braydon on the water as well. He stood up on Melissa's board and she took him along for the ride. He was of course in awe of the huge animals all around.
