2 Year Liver-versary

Two years ago today was the day that I received my second liver transplant. It is of course a happy day, but also a day to look back.

The funny thing is, that considering the experience of an organ donation is traumatic, when I look back, all I have is good memories. Yes, I do remember the fear, the uncertainty, the pain, and boredom of sitting in the hospital, but none of those stick.

Instead I remember the love and support of all my friends and family. I remember the connections that we have made with other people going through similar circumstances. I remember the visits in the hospital and my wife and friends planning a recovery cruise for two months after the surgery, and planning my real comeback trip to Puerto Rico from the hospital bed. I remember all the people who saved me from eating hospital food by bringing food to us in the hospital.

Perhaps most importantly, I remember that two years ago today marked the beginning of a new life, My Third Chance at Life, and I owe it to complete strangers. During an immensely difficult time, a family made a decision that saved my life and opened up more doors then I could have ever imagined. There is not a day that goes by that I do not think about that. And for that, I am thankful.
